Olerud
*I have a permanent stain on my brain from watching John Olerud play for the Mariners in my first Northwest stint a few years back.
They couldn't just announce "now batting, the first baseman, John Olerud" at Safeco Field. No, the PA guy just had to scream "John OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOleruuuuuud!!!!!" every time he came to the plate, even if Seattle was losing 18-3 in the ninth and most of the crowd was gone. Five years later, I still hear that in my head every time his name is mentioned, which wasn't so bad when he wasn't playing for the Sox.
That was back in the heyday of SoDo Mojo, the Mariners' marketing campaign at the time (To put it in a Boston frame of reference, imagine a a slogan like "Charlestown Alive!")
Now the Mojo has worn off and the taxpayers are still paying for the Kingdome, nevermind the half-billion dollar bill for the new park.
*You know how Yankees fans drone on and on about Captain Courageous Derek Jeter and his four rings? Am I the only one who has noticed that CCDJ and the rest of the Yankees stopped winning rings right around the time they stopped being "O'Neil/Brossius/Tino's team" and morphed into "Jeter's team?"
Oh and next time a Yankees fan tries to lay that "four rings" claptrap on you, point out that Lenny DiNardo has more rings than A-Rod, Mussina, Giambi and Brown combined.
*I am declaring Easy Street Records, about a 10 minute walk from my place in West Seattle, the Best Record Shop In The World. Not only two floors with tons of new and used CDs and DVDs, but also a diner that serves breakfast til 3. And the food is as good as the Breakfast Club in Allston, which is about my highest praise possible on breakfast food. Also, Pearl Jam did an unannounced show in front of 200 people there last month that was supposed to be off the hook.
*Chad Finn has a laugh-out-loud funny site. Chad works on the desk at the Globe, and we never officially met, but he correctly ID'd me as the guy who usually walked around the office wearing a gaudy vintage Expos hat.
*I've been really encouraged by early feedback to the site. I'd like to ask one of two things: 1. If you like what you see, could you make a habit of clicking on one ad per visit? I've deliberately put them on the bottom left so they're not too obtrusive. I'm on a pace to earn enough money for a six-pack in about a year or so, and I'm getting greedy and want a 12-pack of Sam Adams Cream Stout. Or, if you don't want to do that but still like the site, tell a friend and send along a link in an email. Thanks.
