UFC 53 main event: Arlovsky vs. Eilers
(Note: to read the UFC 53 diary in chronological order, scroll down to the "Countdown to UFC 53" post and move up from there).
Usually they show all the celebs in the crowd, but they're in Atlantic City, not Vegas and thus not near LA. Roy Jones Jr. is there though.
Alright, Big John McCarthy lays down the rules and we're off ...
Round 1 -- Arlovsky busts open Eilers' nose early. He nails him with a couple more punches. I almost feel bad for Eilers here. Arlovsky is such a ridiculously complete fighter and is in his prime. Give Eilers credit for taking the fight.
Goodnight. Arlovsky dropped him with a punch, pounced, and Big John stepped in before Arlovsky killed him.
On the replay, it shows Eilers wound up for a punch and his right knee went out, sort of like a baseball player tearing an ACL rounding the bases. Hoo boy ... you can actually see his knee pop out on the slo-mo. Arlovsky nailed him with a punch on the way down.
Arlovsky and Mir should be one hell of a fight, if Mir doesn't have ring rust. Arlovsky looks like he put in about 10 minutes on a treadmill, not like he was just in a fight.
OK ... I was going to bail out here, where they show the prelim fights when the show runs short. But this guy Shonie Carter is coming out to the octagon dressed as a pimp, with a cane and drinking out of some gold chalice. I gotta stick around for this one. He's also come out to one of those blaxpoitation songs .. Shaft, maybe? His jacket sort of looks like what Michael Jackson wore in the video to Beat It.
Arcata, CA's Nate Quarry is his middleweight opponent. The signal is going in and out again. DirecTV seems like the greatest thing in the world on paper. And it is, when the signal works. But if you breathe too hard, the signal goes out.
Shonie's from Chicago and has a record of 76-12-8. His nickname is Mr. International. No histrionics from Quarry, who is another product of the Spike TV show. And he trains with Randy Couture, so he's got to be solid. Basically, Quarry pummels Mr. International for a couple minutes, and ref Mario Yamasaki stops the fight.
Sorry to disappoint my vast worldwide audience but that's it for me. No more prelims. I'm off to explore Seattle's steamy, seductive nightlife.
