UFC 54
Alright, like I didn't know I was going to end up in front of my television watching UFC 54. I'm probably not going to do a match-by-match running diary per se, but I'll check in a few times over the course of the night.
Show's at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. There's a much bigger match in the opener than one might expect, a welterweight showdown between Frank Trigg and Georges St. Pierre. Trigg has had two cracks at Matt Hughes' welterweight title and twice dominated the fight, only to lose at the end to rear chokes (which look sort of like pro wrestling sleeperholds, except they really put you out). St. Pierre, from Montreal, has just buzzsawed his way through the competition and is one of the hottest prospects in the game. Trigg needs this fight if he wants another title shot and St. George is clearly the No. 1 contender if he wins. This might be the show-stealer.
Incidentally, if you're wondering where today's CMLL lucha report was, well, I really did get out of the house for awhile. Regardless, though, Ultimo Guerrero teamed with Tarzan Boy and Hector Garza to score a convincing win over Mistico, Dr. Wagner, and Shocker. (Shocker was the guy who was in that McDonald's commercial in Spanish that inexplicably aired during NFL games last year). Mistico was pinned in the second fall and Wagner in the third.
Trigg's nickname is Twinkletoes. Odd nickname for a fighter, but I'm not about to make fun of him.
Wow … St. Pierre just puts on an absolute clinic in the first round. Hit a kick, knocked Trigg down with a jab, got into the mount and spent most of the round just wailing on Trigg with punches and elbows. Got a choke, couldn't put Trigg away, continued to pound on him, rolled him to the center of the octagon, clinched a rear choke, and it was over at 4:09. Just a totally dominating performance. St. Pierre's clearly the top contender for the welterweight belt and a match with Hughes should be awesome.
In fact, St. Pierre just challenged Hughes, who is in the house.
Shaq's in the house, too, sitting in the front row. I'd be pretty ticked if I spent $300 on a seat in the second row and had to sit behind him.
