Checking in
Some folks who have checked in here for the first time over the past few days might be trying to figure out what this site is all about.
I've been trying to figure that out, too. The blog basically started with me popping off to my friends back home in Boston since it was easier than sending out individual emails, and the site has grown in a way I never would have imagined.
Though the majority of people who have visited the site have done so through the link to my friend Matt's Dispatches from Iraq series, this isn't a military blog. Matt wanted a chance to give people a glimpse of what life over in Iraq is like; I had the platform to give him the opportunity to do so. It has worked out really well.
(I should clarify, since there has been occasional confusion the emails I've received: I'M NOT MATT!!!! I, Dave, am the stereotypical lazy slob sportswriter, in Seattle. Matt is the soldier in Iraq, who is one of my best friends, who is sending me the Dispatches I am posting on the blog).
If you poke around the site you'll find posts about baseball, football, bad music, ultimate fighting, wrestling, the state of the journalism business in general and sports journalism business in particular, a lot of Boston-related material (my hometown); occasional Seattle-related material (where I live) and pretty much anything that's on my brain on any given day.
Granted, it is a pretty unusual mix of topics. I think I might actually be scared if someone out there had all the same interests as me. But as a friend who is a regular reader put it, "the thing that works is that if there's a topic I'm not interested in, all I have to do is scroll down a post or two to find something I like." That works for me, and if you find you like some of the stuff on the site and not others, I'd invite you to do the same, because I'd rather keep the same range of topics on the site than narrow it down to a specific topic or two.
My schedule is about to change at my day gig because of football season. There isn't going to be less material on the site, but I'm going to shift things around a bit and make a few changes. Beginning next week, look for the following:
Sunday -- Something related to Iraq each week. Every other week it will have a new Dispatches from Iraq posting. On alternating weeks we're going to go with reader feedback when we have enough material to run; if not, I might look for interesting links from across the political spectrum and link them. We'll see. This Sunday, we're going to have our first Ask Matt segment -- feel free to submit a question -- plus quite a bit of feedback -- likewise, feel free to contribute.
Monday -- I've been doing general Monday Musings columns more or less since the start of the site. That won't change. I anticipate a lot of blabbing about football and the baseball pennant races.
Tuesday -- I've been running the Chile's Corner column every other Sunday. It will move to Tuesday starting next week, and we're likely going to alternate Chile's Corner with another columnist who isn't 100% official yet.
Wednesday -- I've occasionally done a column called "The Biz" about the sports journalism business when the mood has struck. That probably won't change.
Thursday -- Next week will mark the debut of the Dave's World Thursday Football Wiseguys. The roundtable will include Shawn O'Neal, the senior editor for Lindy's college football and basketball magazines; general troublemaker Dave Scott; up-and-coming sportswriter Chris Forsberg; and an array of guest panelists throughout the season. We'll take a look at what's going on in both college and pro football. It should be fun.
Friday -- I'll continue to re-post columns written for Bostonsportsreview.com.
Saturday -- I've generally written about topics like wrestling and Ultimate Fighting on Saturday. Saturday's likely to be my only day off over the next month or two, so I can imagine not wanting to be anywhere near a computer. But I'll probably pop off about wrestling anyway.
