A Dave's World regular chimes in:
You keep saying that the Sox are 7-0 "since" Manny's day off, which
isn't quite true. The day off was the first game in that streak. In
fact, of those seven wins, Manny didn't play in two of them and missed
the majority of two others, even though he had key hits in both.
Look, Manny is a great player, but every once in a while he needs to
be sent to time out. One of my best friends, as diehard a Sox fan as
you'll find, even was fed up with Manny's act after his "harmless" day
off last week. Couple that with his request(s) to be traded and Sox
fans had a right to show their displeasure.
You can't really defend the fact that Manny asked out of the lineup
Saturday night less than an hour before the game, then tried to get
back in. That's not saying that everything Sox management did was
above the board, but like most other pissing matches of this type, the
truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.
Clearly you're of the mentality that Manny can do whatever he wants,
as long as he keeps producing. Certainly you're far from alone, but
don't blame those who were initially upset and were able to forgive
and forget.
As far as the harping on the Aubrey Huff thing, give Epstein a little
credit for not letting emotion cloud his common sense and good
judgment. That's why you can still watch "Manny being Manny" in a Sox
uniform ... and being a difficult drain on the Sox payroll.
Hey, I'm a big boy, I can take criticism. This isn't top-down, ignore-the-people and listen-to-focus-groups journalism here. But anyway, as for the first item, well, I look at it as: Manny insists on taking his off day. Francona grants it. Sox go out and win. That's victory No. 1, and go from there. But admittedly last time I made that reference I didn't parse my words clearly enough. As for the rest of the email, are you seeing what Roberto Petagine has done in the cleanup spot so far today?
