Monday Musings
*So I overheard someone griping about the cost of an MBTA fare ($1.25) at Davis Station yesterday.
I can't believe I'm about to defend the T, but I am.
There's plenty of valid gripes about the T these days: Frequent interruptions, rude service, the trains stop running too early at night, etc.
The price isn't one of them.
Look at the cost of a single fare for subway systems across the country: the New York Metro system is $2 a ride. Philly's SEPTA is $2 and they're trying to up it to $3. The DC metro can go as high as $3.90 per ride. Portland's light rail is $1.80 with considerably less overhead than the T. The cost of rapid transit fares in Boston is a steal. Stop whining about it.
Likewise for people who gripe about the new Silver Line bus service. So you didn't get a brand-new train. Boo-hoo. Most of the areas of the city serviced by the Silver Line already have a T line running through it -- the airport has the blue line; the South End, Roxbury and JP all have the Orange line. Yeah, in a perfect world we'd all have our very own train right around the corner. As though the city, state or federal government is going to underwrite any sort of new rail project for Boston after the Big Dig fiasco.
*Geez, if I didn't know any better I'd think that Boston Lobsters tennis is getting the amount of ink it is getting in some places because those places are their primary sponsors. But then, I've been out of town a couple months, so perhaps Lobstermania is indeed running wild. Meanwhile, lacrosse continues to grow and grow and grow and doesn't get increased media attention commensurate to the level of interest.
*Speaking of said places, yet another sports reporter quit their weekly sections. That makes three since last October. Must be a random string of coincidences.
*Gotten a lot of page views again to Matt's posting, over 1,200 since this time yesterday afternoon. I have a couple emails asking why it was cut short. We (as in Matt and I) did that because Matt is going to have limited contact over the next couple months and I want to stretch out the material we already have to cover things until he's back in more regular touch.
I got an email from a very nice woman out West who wrote passionately about her son, a fine young man who died a brave death in action in Iraq. Email like this is making me consider breaking off Matt's Dispatches and their feedback onto a separate site when I get the time. It is a little awkward making the transition from the bad jokes and sports riffs I usually go off on with this site to really heavy stuff like this. Or maybe it is the fact we can go from the serious to the silly and back and there's room for a little bit of everything that makes the site work. You guys and girls are the ones that make this site move, so I'd appreciate your thoughts.
