It is a tale that is accepted as fact in Seattle sports media circles, even though Mariners management prefers not to talk about it to this day.

Supposedly, the story from July 31, 1997, went something like this: Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette told Seattle counterpart Woody Williams the Mariners could have closer Heathcliff Slocumb for prospects Jason Varitek OR Derek Lowe.
