Baseball blatherings
*Remember "Hall of Famer" Einar Diaz? That was Sean McDonough's nickname for the catcher, after he got all snippy at Pedro a few years back. Remember Sean McDonough? He was that great announcer who called the Red Sox back when quality occasionally trumped penny-pinching at NESN. Anyway, HOFED got his first start since June 2 in St. Louis last night in place of Yadier Molina and bounced into two double plays, still managed to leave four on base, and struck out in his 0-for-4 night. Send him off to Cooperstown.
*Whouldathunkit? Part 1: Tony Clark is hitting .352 for the Diamondbacks. He's at 43-for-121 on the year. If he had enough at bats to qualify, he'd be second in the National League behind Derrek Lee. He also has 11 home runs, second on the team behind Troy Glaus (17). Of course, Clarkie could be hitting .852 and my mental image would still be that of him swinging wildly at a Foulkey offering and missing to end Game 6 of the ALCS last year.
*Whouldathunkit? Part 2: The best team in the AL over the past month? The Cleveland Indians. They've rushed to 21-12 since May 9. 8-1 since they canned Eddie Murray as hitting coach. Too bad for them they're stuck behind Chicago and Minnesota (the wild card might not be coming out of the East this year, folks). Hmm ... I just looked up the Indians' results and out of that 21-12 they're 3-7 against the White Sox and Twins. Not quite so impressive.
*Don't be fooled by Chan Ho Park's 7-1 record. He's getting 8.71 runs of support per game. That's how someone with a 5.15 ERA ends up with a 7-1 record.
*I wasn't sure whose side I was going to take in the whole Jose Guillen/LAA of A skirmish the other night until I discovered that Guillen and I have the same birthday, May 17, so I am all on his side now. Jay Riemersma was born on May 17th as well. Also sharing the birthday is Boston Globe High School Sports Reporting Superstar Mike Grimala. Globe Freelance Superstar Chris Forsberg, though, was born on May 16, so he can't be in our club.
*Yup, I'm overtired, kids. Goodnight.
