Scooter!
Fox is feeding us the fierce natural rivalry between the Mariners and Padres today.
Dave's World's all-time favorite cartoon baseball, Scooter, was supposed to make a pre-game appearance to explain Jake Peavy's curve.
Announcer 1 (I think Thom Brennerman): Well, now here's Scooter to explain the curveball.
(About 10 seconds of silence. No Scooter).
Announcer 1: Well, I guess Scooter will be joining us later.
Steve Lyons: Early start today. I was out partying with Scooter last night and I guess he couldn't answer the bell. Little guy's gotta slow down.
Incidentally, the teams are wearing 1930s PCL throwback uniforms. The Padres are wearing 1970s striped athletic socks, which I didn't know existed in the '30s.
Also incidentally, Aaron Sele is pitching like Aaron Sele again, at least in the first.
*I have to give a belated shoutout to J.E., who is clearly a voracious reader of Dave's World Mixed Martial Arts writing. In case you're a Dave's World newbie, you can check out a piece I wrote on MMA a few weeks ago here.
*So yesterday I'm at this chain coffee place in West Seattle. Not THE big chain, although THE big chain of course is right across the street.
I pick up a package of what are called "ultimate malted milk balls." I think of buying them, then see a price of $7.95.
Me, to cashier: What makes these worth eight bucks?
Cashier, laughing: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The fancy label, maybe.
And you know what? I'll probably be back to that coffee place again. Most chains would have trained their cashiers to say something like "oh, they're my favorite! I buy three bags a day!!!" I actually appreciate not being fed a line of total bull, just for once, when I go out to buy something.
*BTW, Damian Jackson is with the Padres these days. He's actually starting today, too.
Scooter! 6/4
